Put The Number Down

This message is for the Sunday table you have laid in your own house for three years, that started at eleven people and is six tonight, and the growing of it that you have been carrying as your own personal failure

She puts the extra leaf in the table.

It is a heavy old thing, that leaf, and it takes two hands and a knee, and she has done it every Sunday for three years. Then the cloth. Then the places, going down one side and up the other, and the forks that have never matched since her mother died and the good set got split between three daughters.

Fourteen places. There is a pan of stew on since four o'clock and enough bread for twenty because bread is cheap and running out is not survivable.

Tonight there will be six.

She knows it before anybody rings the bell, because she has become a woman who knows. There is a note on her phone with the dates going down one column and the numbers going down the other, and she has looked at that column so many times she could recite it to you like a psalm. Eleven. Nine. Twelve. Nine. Seven. Seven. Six.

She has tried everything. She moved it to Saturday and moved it back. She put cards through three hundred doors and paid extra for the nice paper. She started at six, then half past, then six again. She stopped the long prayer at the end because somebody once said it went on. She has apologized for the parking. She has apologized for the stairs. She has, God help her, apologized for herself.

And tonight, halfway down the second side of the table, with the fourteenth fork in her hand, something stops her.

Not a voice. Nothing dramatic. Just a question, arriving from somewhere that was not her own head, standing in her kitchen with its arms folded, asking her quite calmly:

Who told you the growing was yours?

She stands there holding a fork.

And she cannot answer it. She cannot find the person who told her. She cannot find the sermon, the book, the meeting, the verse. She has carried a thing for three years and she has just discovered, standing over her own tablecloth, that nobody ever actually handed it to her.

Now come here. Because I am not telling you about a woman and a fork. I am telling you about you.

You have a column of numbers somewhere. Maybe it is places at a table. Maybe it is the youth group, the prayer meeting, the little congregation your father started and you are keeping breathing, the class, the round, the thing nobody but you can see. And somewhere in the last few years the number stopped being information and became a verdict, and the verdict is on you, and you read it every single week.

I know, my love. I know. Put the fork down and hear me.

Put The Number Down

The Lord was the One adding

Listen to what the first believers actually did, because the list is short and it is very ordinary.

They were devoted to the apostles' teaching. They broke bread. They went house to house. They ate together with glad and sincere hearts. They praised God. That is it. That is the whole strategy, and it is not a strategy at all: it is a handful of people who kept turning up at each other's tables.

And then, right at the end of it, comes a sentence with a completely different subject.

Day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they ate together with glad and generous hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.Acts 2:46 to 47

Hear this at your own table. You are not the reason there are six, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture makes the Lord the subject of that sentence and the adding His own verb, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has had you putting that leaf in every Sunday for three years.

Hear the grammar. Hear it, because the grammar is the whole message.

They devoted. They broke. They ate. They praised.

The Lord added.

Four verbs in their hands and one verb in His, and the one in His hands is the one you have been getting up at four in the morning to try to do.

The written word makes the Lord the subject of the adding, and the Spirit of God has never handed that verb to anybody.

Somebody put that on you and I want it off. Paul said it plainly to a church that was arguing about which minister was the impressive one: I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. Two men, two jobs, two names, and not one of them the one who grows anything. Paul had a spade. Apollos had a watering can. Neither of them had the sun, and neither of them lay awake at night trying to be it.

You have been doing sums like a person who believes her own hands are the sun.

Nothing written anywhere puts the arithmetic in a woman's hands, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying it the whole time.

And now hear what I am not saying, because I love you too much to leave it fuzzy.

I am not telling you the table fills. I am not promising you eleven, or fourteen, or a hundred. I do not know what your Sundays look like a year from here, and neither does anybody who tells you they do, and I will not guess with your life.

The written word gives you the ordinary work and keeps the increase, and the Spirit of God has never once renegotiated that.

And I am not saying six is a failure. Six is a number. It is not a report card, it is not a judgement, and it is not a measurement of whether God is pleased with you. A small room is not a rebuke, and a full one is not a prize; both of them are just rooms where people are being fed and loved, and both of them belong to Him.

What I am saying is that the weight you have been carrying to the table every Sunday for three years is not yours, was never issued to you, and has your shoulders in the state they are in for nothing.

Hear this too, and let it land on the cloth. You have not failed at this, and Scripture is what says so. What is written puts the adding in His hands and leaves the laying of a table in yours, and the Spirit of God has never once handed the arithmetic of a room to the woman who cooks in it.

The breakthrough

So put the number down.

Not the work. I am not asking you to stop laying the table, and I would not dare. That table is yours and it is good and heaven has watched you set every place at it. Keep the pan on. Keep the bread. Keep the teaching. Keep the door on the latch. Keep going house to house.

Put down the arithmetic.

Take it out of your pocket right now, tonight, and hand it back to the One whose job it actually is, because He has been reaching for it for three years and you would not let go. He is the Lord who added to them day by day, and He has never once needed a person to be the sun for Him.

Nothing in what is written makes six people a verdict, and the Holy Spirit has been at that table every Sunday.

You do the ordinary thing. He does the adding. That division of labor is older than your kitchen and it is not up for renegotiation.

The written word makes the Lord the one who adds and gives you the ordinary work instead, and the Holy Spirit has had you carrying that leaf and that pan for three years, so nothing about six people tonight is a verdict on you.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these out loud, standing up if you can, with your hands open. Know what they rest on. This authority is not yours by nature and it is not confidence talking: it is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so you are speaking as one who represents the King and not as one begging for a fuller table. And you speak under His will and never over it. The written word makes the Lord the one who adds, and the Holy Spirit has had you laying that table for three years, so the standing you speak from was never built out of a count. However He answers, and whatever your Sundays become, the outcome is His.

  1. Counting, get out of my hands and out of my pocket tonight. The Lord was the One adding to them day by day, so the arithmetic goes back to the God whose arithmetic it is, and my hands are free for the bread.
  2. Six, you are a number and you are not my judge, and I take your gavel off you. God gave the growth while Paul planted and Apollos watered, so I plant, I water, and I let the Sun be the Sun.
  3. Jesus, You are the Lord who adds, so in Your name I put the tally down and pick the bread up. I am the one who lays the table, so tonight I do my small ordinary part gladly and leave Yours in Your hands where it has always belonged.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
